with the estimate for the two Hopper Barges of 80 ft. long

to cost $96,875.

13. It may be however that the Hong Kong requirements

would not be met by one large econogical vessel so thoroughly as by two or perhaps three smaller vessels, the local arrangements might not harmonise with waiting to load a big Hopper Barge, and in that case the design as set forth in the drawing submitted would we think generally meet the requirements of depositing the spoil a short distance from the Harbour in smooth weather. But vessels as shown in the drawings of Messrs. Wilks and Jacks would be quite unsuitable except in smooth water and should not be built of wood for the reasons above stated. If therefore smaller vessels are required we suggest that we should be instructed to design two suitable vessels of somewhat larger dimensions and of better qualities for That these vessels running out some distance to sea. should be of steel instead of wood if the sewage is a

moist sewage,

and that quotations both in England and the Colony should be obtained with a view to seeing which

would be the most economical,

14. We may mention that the steam Hopper Barges "Alpha" and "Beta" serving Liverpool and which are admirable sea going vessels in all weathers are 150 ft.

They carry 400 tons long, 25 ft. beam, and 13 ft. deep. with a hopper capacity of 12,700 cubic feet and one such vessel would probably fulfil the requirements of Hong Kong

for some years to come.
